Target Information

Fatty acid binding proteins (FABP) are small (approximately 13–14 kDa) intracellular proteins with a high degree of tissue specificity. FABPs bind long-chain fatty acids and are abundant in various cell types, playing an essential role in intracellular fatty acid utilization. There are at least six distinct types of FABP, each showing tissue-specific expression patterns.

Due to their small size, FABPs leak rapidly from chemically damaged or dying cells, leading to increased serum levels. Liver FABP serves as a sensitive marker for hepatocyte damage both in vitro and in vivo. Histologically, damaged tissues show reduced FABP presence, facilitating identification of affected areas. L-FABP is also useful for detecting liver damage during and after transplantation.
