Target Information

Fatty acid binding proteins (FABPs) are small (approximately 13–14 kDa) intracellular proteins with high tissue specificity. These cytoplasmic proteins bind long-chain fatty acids and play an important role in their intracellular utilization.
There are at least six distinct types of FABP, each showing specific tissue expression patterns. FABPs rapidly leak out of damaged cells, leading to elevated serum levels. Liver FABP is a sensitive marker for hepatocyte damage both in vitro and in vivo.
Histologically, damaged tissues show reduced FABP presence, aiding in identification of affected areas. Liver FABP also serves as a marker for rapid hepatocyte lysis and for detecting liver damage in transplantation and toxicology assays.
