This antibody recognizes an extracellular epitope of CD326 / EpCAM, a marker of epithelial lineages that is over-expressed in many carcinomas.
Target Information
Ep-CAM (epithelial adhesion molecule, epithelial specific antigen, ESA) is a transmembrane glycoprotein (~40 kDa) expressed in epithelial tissues. It functions as a calcium-independent cell adhesion molecule influencing cell cycle, proliferation, and metabolism through activation of proto-oncogene c-myc and cyclins A and E.
Ep-CAM-mediated adhesions negatively regulate cadherin-based adhesions, impacting epithelial differentiation and growth. Overexpression is associated with enhanced epithelial proliferation and is a marker for epithelial-derived tumors.
Ep-CAM is localized on the basolateral surface of most simple epithelia and carcinoma types, and helps distinguish adenocarcinomas from pleural mesotheliomas.
