Neuronal PAS domain protein 3 (NPAS3)는 뇌에 풍부하게 존재하는 basic helix-loop-helix PAS domain 전사 인자로, 발달 중인 신경상피에서 널리 발현됩니다.
최근 정신분열증 가족에서 유전적 전좌에 의해 교란된 사례가 보고되었으며, FGF 수용체 1의 발현을 조절함으로써 치아이랑(dentate gyrus)에서의 FGF 신호 조절 및 신경 발생에 관여하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
NPAS3 결손 마우스는 성장 지연, 전방 해마 크기 감소, 뇌량 저형성, 뇌실 확장 및 행동 이상을 보이며, 글루타메이트, 도파민, 세로토닌 관련 신경 신호 경로에도 이상을 나타냅니다.
이러한 결과는 NPAS3가 구조적 및 기능적 뇌 발달에 필수적인 역할을 한다는 것을 보여줍니다. 현재까지 최소 세 가지 이소폼이 알려져 있습니다.
