Target Information
Neurotrypsin is a central nervous system-expressed serine protease whose truncation or absence causes nonsyndromic mental retardation. It is most prominently expressed in structures involved in learned behavior and memory processing, such as the cerebral cortex, hippocampus, and amygdala. Neurotrypsin is implicated in axonal outgrowth, neuronal plasticity, and perineuronal environment organization, often in coordination with other proteases such as tissue plasminogen activator. At least two isoforms of neurotrypsin are known to exist.
