Target Information

Neuronal PAS domain protein 3 (NPAS3) is a brain-enriched basic helix-loop-helix PAS domain transcription factor broadly expressed in the developing neuroepithelium. NPAS3 has been found disrupted by genetic translocation in a family affected with schizophrenia and is involved in regulating FGF signaling in the dentate gyrus by controlling FGF receptor subtype 1 expression, influencing neurogenesis.
NPAS3 knockout mice show growth retardation, brain defects such as reduced anterior hippocampus size, hypoplasia of the corpus callosum, enlarged ventricles, and behavioral abnormalities. These mice also display disruptions in neurosignaling pathways involving glutamate, dopamine, and serotonin, highlighting NPAS3’s essential role in brain development.
At least three isoforms of NPAS3 are known to exist.
