Target Information
Apoptosis Inducing Factor (AIF) induces chromatin condensation and DNA fragmentation, key features of apoptosis. AIF is localized in mitochondria and translocates to the nucleus during apoptosis, promoting the release of apoptogenic proteins such as cytochrome c and caspase-9. It is highly conserved between human and mouse and broadly expressed. Mutations in AIF cause combined oxidative phosphorylation deficiency 6, leading to severe mitochondrial encephalomyopathy. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants, and a related pseudogene exists on chromosome 10.
