Anaplastic Lymphoma Receptor Tyrosine Kinase (ALK) is a member of the insulin receptor superfamily and plays a critical role in brain development.
Mutations, rearrangements, and amplifications in the ALK gene are associated with various tumors, including anaplastic large cell lymphoma, neuroblastoma, and non-small cell lung cancer.
Chromosomal rearrangements often produce a fusion gene combining ALK (chromosome 2) and NPM (chromosome 5), resulting in the oncogenic NPM-ALK fusion protein.
ALK encodes a receptor tyrosine kinase with a transmembrane and extracellular domain, showing high similarity to LTK.
It is essential for neuronal development and function in the nervous system.
