Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells found in both keratinizing (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing tissues (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs are known, classified into two types: type I (acidic polypeptides) and type II (basic polypeptides).
Keratin 14 belongs to the type I subfamily of low molecular weight keratins and forms complexes with keratin 5. It distinguishes stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells and is useful for identifying squamous cell carcinomas. It is also considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas.
At least one member of the acidic and one of the basic families are expressed in all epithelial cells.
