Product Specific Information

Antibody detects endogenous levels of Vimentin only when phosphorylated at Ser83.

Target Information

Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It is involved in intracellular transport of proteins between the nucleus and plasma membrane. Vimentin, along with desmin, is expressed during early cellular development and later replaced by tissue-specific IFPs.
Vimentin plays a role in steroid synthesis by serving as a storage network for cholesterol-containing lipid droplets. Phosphorylation of vimentin by a protein kinase leads to breakdown of intermediate filaments and activation of ATP- and myosin light chain-dependent contractile events. These cytoskeletal changes facilitate lipid droplet interaction with mitochondria, enhancing cholesterol transport and steroid synthesis.
