Target Information
Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It is involved in intracellular protein transport between the nucleus and plasma membrane. During early cellular development, vimentin is co-expressed with desmin and later replaced by tissue-specific IFPs. Vimentin also plays a role in steroid synthesis by mediating cholesterol transport within cells. Phosphorylation of vimentin leads to cytoskeletal reorganization that facilitates lipid droplet–mitochondria interactions, enhancing steroidogenic activity.
