Target Information
CD36, also known as scavenger receptor class B member 3, is expressed on macrophages, platelets, and adipocytes. It plays a role in lipid metabolism, inflammation, and atherosclerosis, and recognizes ligands such as oxidized LDL, long-chain fatty acids, and apoptotic cells.
CD36 acts as a receptor for thrombospondin and is a major glycoprotein on platelet surfaces. It binds collagen, thrombospondin, anionic phospholipids, and oxidized LDL, mediating cytoadherence of Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes.
Mutations in CD36 cause platelet glycoprotein deficiency. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified.
Diseases associated with CD36 include Platelet Glycoprotein IV Deficiency and Coronary Heart Disease 7.
