Target Information
Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It is involved in intracellular transport between the nucleus and plasma membrane. During development, vimentin is expressed with desmin and later replaced by tissue-specific IFPs. Vimentin contributes to steroid synthesis by acting as a storage network for cholesterol-containing lipid droplets. Phosphorylation of vimentin by protein kinase leads to filament breakdown and cytoskeletal rearrangement, facilitating cholesterol transport to mitochondria and enhancing steroid synthesis.
