Target Information
The protein encoded by the BCL-X (BCL2L1) gene belongs to the BCL-2 protein family. Members of this family form hetero- or homodimers and act as anti- or pro-apoptotic regulators involved in diverse cellular activities.
These proteins localize to the outer mitochondrial membrane and regulate the opening of the voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC), which controls mitochondrial membrane potential, reactive oxygen species production, and cytochrome C release—key events in the induction of apoptosis.
Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants encoding two isoforms: the longer isoform acts as an apoptotic inhibitor, while the shorter isoform functions as an apoptotic activator.
