Target Information
The BCL-X gene encodes a member of the BCL-2 protein family. These proteins form homo- or heterodimers and regulate apoptosis by controlling mitochondrial membrane permeability. Located at the outer mitochondrial membrane, BCL-X influences VDAC channel activity, mitochondrial membrane potential, reactive oxygen species generation, and cytochrome C release. Alternative splicing produces two isoforms: the longer isoform inhibits apoptosis, while the shorter isoform promotes it.
