Target Information

The protein encoded by the BCL-X gene belongs to the BCL-2 protein family. Members of this family form hetero- or homodimers and act as anti- or pro-apoptotic regulators involved in various cellular activities. These proteins are located at the outer mitochondrial membrane and regulate the opening of the mitochondrial channel (VDAC), which controls mitochondrial membrane potential, reactive oxygen species production, and cytochrome C release — all key steps in apoptosis.
Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding two isoforms: the longer isoform inhibits apoptosis, while the shorter isoform promotes it.
