Target Information
The protein encoded by the BCL-X gene belongs to the BCL-2 protein family. Members of this family form hetero- or homodimers and act as anti- or pro-apoptotic regulators involved in various cellular activities. These proteins are located at the outer mitochondrial membrane and help regulate mitochondrial membrane potential, reactive oxygen species production, and cytochrome C release — key processes in apoptosis.
Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants encoding two isoforms:
- The longer isoform acts as an apoptotic inhibitor.
- The shorter isoform acts as an apoptotic activator.
