Caspase 7 belongs to the family of cysteine proteases, which are categorized into apoptotic and inflammatory subfamilies.
Apoptotic caspases are involved in programmed cell death, while inflammatory caspases are associated with immune responses.
Caspase 7 functions as an executioner caspase activated by initiator caspases, leading to cleavage of cellular substrates during apoptosis.
It shares homology with caspases 1 and 3 and the C. elegans CED-3 protein.
Alternative splicing of Caspase-7 mRNA produces multiple isoforms.
Caspase-7 activity can be inhibited by XIAP expression.
Diseases associated with CASP7 include Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus 17 and Aleutian Mink Disease.
