Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs have been identified, generally classified into two groups:
- Type I (acidic polypeptides)
- Type II (basic polypeptides)
Keratin 14 belongs to the type I subfamily of low molecular weight keratins and typically pairs with keratin 5. It helps distinguish stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells and is valuable for identifying squamous cell carcinomas. It also serves as a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas. In all epithelial cells, at least one acidic and one basic CK family member are expressed.
