Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, both in keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs can be identified. Most CK family members fall into two classes:
- Type I (acidic polypeptides)
- Type II (basic polypeptides)
Keratin 14 belongs to the type I subfamily of low molecular weight keratins and, together with keratin 5, distinguishes stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells. It is a useful marker for identifying squamous cell carcinomas and is considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas. At least one acidic and one basic keratin family member are expressed in all epithelial cells.
