Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs can be identified. Most CKs belong to either type I (acidic polypeptides) or type II (basic polypeptides).
Keratin 14, a type I low molecular weight keratin, pairs with keratin 5 and helps distinguish stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells. It is useful for identifying squamous cell carcinomas and serves as a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas.
At least one acidic and one basic CK are expressed in all epithelial cells.
