Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs have been identified, generally classified into two groups: type I (acidic polypeptides) and type II (basic polypeptides).
Keratin 14, a type I low molecular weight keratin, pairs with keratin 5 and serves as a distinguishing marker for stratified epithelial cells versus simple epithelial cells. It is valuable in identifying squamous cell carcinomas and is considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas. All epithelial cells express at least one acidic and one basic cytokeratin.
