Target Information

Microtubules are intracellular dynamic polymers composed of alpha/beta-tubulin heterodimers and microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs). They exhibit intrinsic polarity with dynamic plus ends and less dynamic minus ends, playing vital roles in mitosis, meiosis, cell shape maintenance, and intracellular transport.
Microtubules are essential for cell movement via flagella and cilia, and in mammalian cells, their minus ends are anchored at microtubule organizing centers (MTOCs).
Tubulin polymerization requires GTP, and microtubule dynamics are characterized by reversible polymerization and dynamic instability.
Alpha-tubulin (~50 kDa) exists as part of soluble alpha/beta-tubulin dimers or polymerized microtubules. In humans, six genes encode tubulin classes.
