Target Information
Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is synthesized as a 31 kDa inactive pro-form that accumulates in the cytosol. Activation of inflammasomes triggers cleavage of pro-IL-1β into the active 17 kDa form via caspase-1. IL-1β lacks a signal peptide and is secreted through a non-classical pathway. It signals through IL-1RI and IL-1RII receptors, shared with IL-1α, and its activity is moderated by IL-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1RA). Elevated IL-1β levels are associated with chronic inflammatory conditions, making IL-1β neutralizing antibodies of potential therapeutic value.
