Target Information
The c-Myc protein is a 62 kDa transcription factor encoded by the c-Myc gene on human chromosome 8q24. It is frequently activated in various tumor cells and plays a critical role in cellular proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and cell cycle progression.
Phosphorylation at Thr58/Ser62 by kinases such as glycogen synthase kinase 3, cyclin-dependent kinase, ERK2, and JNK is associated with regulation of cell proliferation and cycle control. c-Myc is also essential for vasculogenesis and angiogenesis in tumor development.
The c-myc oncogene (p62 c-myc) regulates normal cellular proliferation and differentiation, while deregulated expression can induce apoptosis. Antibodies against c-Myc epitopes recognize overexpressed proteins containing Myc epitope tags.
Amplification of the c-Myc gene has been observed in various human tumors, including lung, breast, and colon carcinomas. Translocation of the c-myc locus on chromosome 8 to immunoglobulin loci (chromosomes 14, 2, or 22) is characteristic of Burkitt’s lymphoma and other B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders. Aberrant c-myc expression occurs in tumors of multiple origins such as colorectal, gastric, hepatic, mammary, ovarian, and hematopoietic neoplasms.
