Target Information

The c-Myc protein is a 62 kDa transcription factor encoded by the c-Myc gene on human chromosome 8q24. It is frequently activated in various tumor cells and plays key roles in cellular proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and cell cycle progression.
Phosphorylation at Thr58/Ser62 by kinases such as GSK3, CDK, ERK2, and JNK is functionally associated with cell proliferation and cycle regulation.
Studies indicate that c-Myc is essential for vasculogenesis and angiogenesis during tumor development. Deregulated expression of c-Myc can induce apoptosis in different cell types.
Antibodies against c-Myc epitopes recognize overexpressed proteins containing Myc epitope tags fused to either amino- or carboxy-termini of target proteins.
Amplification of the c-Myc gene has been found in several human tumors, including lung, breast, and colon carcinomas. Translocation of the c-Myc locus on chromosome 8 to immunoglobulin loci (chromosomes 14, 2, or 22) is described in Burkitt’s lymphoma and other B-cell lymphoproliferative conditions.
Aberrant expression of c-Myc occurs in tumors of colorectal, gastric, hepatic, mammary, ovarian, and hematopoietic origins.
