Target Information
Alpha-2-adrenergic receptors are members of the G protein-coupled receptor superfamily, including three highly homologous subtypes: alpha2A, alpha2B, and alpha2C. These receptors regulate neurotransmitter release from sympathetic nerves and adrenergic neurons in the central nervous system.
Mouse studies show that both alpha2A and alpha2C subtypes are required for normal presynaptic control of transmitter release in the heart and central noradrenergic neurons. The alpha2A subtype inhibits release at high stimulation frequencies, while alpha2C modulates neurotransmission at lower activity levels.
This gene encodes the alpha2C subtype, which contains no introns in either coding or untranslated sequences.
