Product Specific Information

This antibody reacts with GFAP, the principal marker of astroglial cells in the central nervous system. It is specifically expressed in satellite cells in peripheral ganglia and in non-myelinating Schwann cells in peripheral nerves. The GFAP protein runs on gels at approximately 55 kDa, typically associated with lower molecular weight bands that represent proteolytic fragments and alternate transcripts from the same gene.
This antibody does not cross-react with rat.

Target Information

GFAP (Glial fibrillary acidic protein) is a class III intermediate filament protein expressed in astrocytes and certain astroglia of the CNS, satellite cells of peripheral ganglia, and non-myelinating Schwann cells of peripheral nerves. Neural stem cells also strongly express GFAP.
Antibodies to GFAP are useful markers of astrocytic cells and are often used to identify astrocyte-derived brain tumors. GFAP is also found in the lens epithelium, Kupffer cells of the liver, some salivary tumor cells, and has been reported in erythrocytes.
GFAP serves as a marker to distinguish astrocytes from other glial cells during development. Mutations in this gene cause Alexander disease, a rare astrocyte disorder. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms.
