Target Information
USP7 (also known as HAUSP) is a ubiquitin-specific protease that removes ubiquitin from its substrates. This deubiquitylating activity stabilizes substrate proteins by preventing their degradation. USP7 is known to antagonize Mdm2, an E3 ubiquitin ligase that targets the tumor suppressor protein p53 for degradation. By deubiquitinating p53, USP7 can stabilize and protect it from Mdm2-mediated degradation, suggesting a potential tumor suppressor role. Additionally, USP7 may also play a role in oncogenic pathways involving p53 activation through ARF-dependent or independent mechanisms, providing an alternative cellular defense against oncogenic stress.
