Target Information
PGP9.5 (Protein Gene Product 9.5, UCH-L1, PARK5) is a neuron-specific protein, structurally and immunologically distinct from neuron-specific enolase. It has a molecular weight of 27 kDa and was first identified by high-resolution two-dimensional PAGE.
PGP9.5 is a member of the ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase family 1 (peptidase family C12) and possesses both hydrolase and ligase activities, generating ubiquitin monomers from small C-terminal adducts.
PGP9.5 is found in:
- Neurons and nerve fibers throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems
- Neuroendocrine cells
- Renal tubules
- Spermatogonia and Leydig cells of the testis
- Ova and corpus luteum cells
Overexpression of PGP9.5 is associated with non-small cell lung cancer, while decreased expression is linked to Huntington’s and Alzheimer’s diseases.
It serves as a useful neuronal marker and is valuable in studies of neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s disease.
