Target Information
Cytokeratin 19 is part of a subfamily of intermediate filament proteins characterized by biochemical diversity, represented in human epithelial tissues by at least 20 different polypeptides.
Cytokeratins range in molecular weight from 40–68 kDa and have isoelectric points between 4.9–7.8. Each human cytokeratin is numbered 1–20.
Expression patterns of cytokeratin subtypes are characteristic of epithelial type and differentiation stage, making them valuable markers for distinguishing epithelial malignancies.
Cytokeratin 19 is not expressed in hepatocytes, thus useful in identifying liver metastasis.
Cytokeratin antibodies assist in tumor differential diagnosis via immunohistochemistry and are valuable tools in cytopathology and flow cytometry.
