이 단백질은 두 개의 알파와 두 개의 베타 소단위로 구성된 사량체 형태를 가지며, 알파 소단위는 IGF-1에 높은 친화성을 가집니다.
리간드 결합 후 자가인산화(1134, 1135, 1136번 위치)가 일어나며, 이어서 RAS, RAF, ERK, p38, JNK 등의 신호전달 경로를 통해 세포 증식 관련 유전자 발현을 유도합니다.
