Product Specific Information
- For Immunohistochemistry (PFA fixed): incubate antibody for 30 min at room temperature.
- Staining of formalin-fixed tissues requires heating tissue sections in 10 mM Tris with 1 mM EDTA, pH 9.0, for 45 min at 95°C, followed by cooling at room temperature for 20 min.
Target Information
Neuron specific enolase (NSE, ENO1, ENO2, ENO3) catalyzes the conversion of 2-phosphoglycerate to phosphoenolpyruvate in glycolysis and the reverse reaction in gluconeogenesis.
NSE is highly stable in biological fluids and diffuses easily into cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) when neuronal membranes are injured.
The gamma-subunit of NSE is expressed primarily in neurons and neuroendocrine cells.
Co-expression of NSE and chromogranin A is common in neuroendocrine neoplasms.
Antibodies to NSE are useful for identifying neuronal cell bodies, developing neuronal lineage, and neuroendocrine cells.
Release of NSE into CSF and blood serves as a biomarker of neuronal injury, and elevated levels are observed in several neurological disorders (stroke, hypoxic brain damage, status epilepticus, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, herpetic encephalitis) and neoplasias (pediatric neuroblastoma, small cell lung cancer).
