Product Specific Information

  • Immunohistochemistry (PFA-fixed): Incubate antibody for 30 minutes at room temperature.
  • For formalin-fixed tissues, heat sections in 10 mM Tris with 1 mM EDTA (pH 9.0) for 45 minutes at 95°C, then cool at room temperature for 20 minutes.

Target Information

Neuron specific enolase (NSE, also known as ENO1, ENO2, ENO3 or enolase α, β, γ) catalyzes the conversion of 2-phosphoglycerate to phosphoenolpyruvate in glycolysis and the reverse in gluconeogenesis.

  • NSE is highly stable in biological fluids and diffuses into extracellular medium and CSF upon neuronal injury.
  • The γ-subunit (ENO2) is expressed primarily in neurons and neuroendocrine cells.
  • Co-expression with chromogranin A is common in neuroendocrine neoplasms.
  • Antibodies to NSE are valuable for identifying neuronal cell bodies, developing neuronal lineages, and neuroendocrine cells.
  • NSE release serves as a biomarker for neuronal injury and is clinically used in diagnosing neurological disorders such as stroke, hypoxic brain damage, status epilepticus, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and herpetic encephalitis.
  • Elevated NSE levels are also observed in neuroblastoma and small cell lung cancer.
