The E2F1 protein is a member of the E2F family of transcription factors, which play a key role in cell cycle regulation and tumor suppressor protein activity.
E2F proteins contain conserved domains such as:
- DNA binding domain
- Dimerization domain (interacts with DP proteins)
- Transactivation domain (acidic amino acids)
- Tumor suppressor protein association domain
E2F1, along with E2F2 and E2F3, possesses an additional cyclin-binding domain and binds preferentially to the retinoblastoma protein (pRB) in a cell cycle-dependent manner. It mediates both cell proliferation and p53-dependent or independent apoptosis.
