Target Information
Isocitrate dehydrogenases catalyze the oxidative decarboxylation of isocitrate to 2-oxoglutarate. These enzymes are divided into NAD(+)-dependent and NADP(+)-dependent subclasses. Five isocitrate dehydrogenases have been identified: three NAD(+)-dependent forms in the mitochondrial matrix, and two NADP(+)-dependent forms—one mitochondrial and one cytosolic. The NADP(+)-dependent cytosolic isozyme encoded by this gene is also present in peroxisomes, where it contributes to NADPH regeneration for intraperoxisomal reductions and other metabolic processes such as alpha-hydroxylation of phytanic acid. This enzyme is essential for maintaining cytoplasmic NADPH levels.
