Target Information
Constant region of immunoglobulin heavy chains. Immunoglobulins are membrane-bound or secreted glycoproteins produced by B lymphocytes. In the recognition phase of humoral immunity, membrane-bound immunoglobulins serve as receptors that trigger clonal expansion and differentiation of B lymphocytes into plasma cells upon antigen binding. Secreted immunoglobulins mediate the effector phase of humoral immunity, eliminating bound antigens. Each immunoglobulin has two antigen-binding sites formed by variable domains of heavy and light chains. These variable domains undergo V-(D)-J rearrangement and somatic hypermutation for affinity maturation. Ig alpha is the major immunoglobulin class in body secretions. [UniProt]
