Target Information

The protein encoded by the classic MBP gene is a major constituent of the myelin sheath of oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells in the nervous system. MBP-related transcripts are also present in the bone marrow and immune system, arising from the long MBP gene (Golli-MBP) that contains three additional upstream exons. Alternative splicing from Golli and MBP transcription start sites yields two sets of MBP-related transcripts and gene products.
Golli mRNAs encode hybrid proteins combining N-terminal Golli sequences with MBP sequences, while MBP-only transcripts produce the well-characterized myelin basic proteins. This conserved gene structure suggests that MBP and Golli transcription units are functionally and regulatory interlinked.
