Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments found in epithelial cells, both keratinizing (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 distinct CKs have been identified. They are divided into two classes:
- Type I (acidic polypeptides)
- Type II (basic polypeptides)
Keratin 14 belongs to the type I subfamily of low molecular weight keratins and typically pairs with keratin 5. It helps distinguish stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells and serves as a useful marker for squamous cell carcinomas. Additionally, it is considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas. In all epithelial cells, at least one acidic and one basic keratin family member are expressed.
