Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells found in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs are known. Most CKs belong to either type I (acidic polypeptides) or type II (basic polypeptides).
Keratin 14 (KRT14) is a type I low molecular weight keratin that pairs with keratin 5 and serves as a marker distinguishing stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells. It is useful in identifying squamous cell carcinomas and considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas.
At least one acidic and one basic keratin are expressed in all epithelial cells.
