Target Information

Interleukin-31 (IL-31) is a T-cell cytokine related to IL-6-type cytokines, mainly produced by T helper type 2 cells. IL-31 functions through a receptor complex composed of IL-31 receptor A and oncostatin M receptor, activating JAK/STAT and AKT pathways.
IL-31 receptor expression is induced in activated monocytes and constitutively expressed in epithelial cells.
Overexpression of IL-31 in transgenic mice leads to pruritus, alopecia, and skin lesions. In humans, IL-31 is associated with atopic dermatitis, making it a potential target for antipruritic drug development.
