Trefoil family 단백질은 최소 하나 이상의 trefoil motif(40개의 아미노산으로 이루어진 도메인, 3개의 보존된 이황화 결합 포함)를 가지며, 위장관 점막에서 분비되는 안정적인 단백질입니다. 이들은 점막 보호, 점액층 안정화, 상피 회복에 관여할 수 있습니다. TFF1 유전자는 위점막에서 발현되며, 인간 종양에서의 발현 연구 대상이기도 합니다. 이 유전자와 관련 trefoil family 유전자는 염색체 21번에 클러스터 형태로 존재합니다.
