Target Information
Ep-CAM (epithelial adhesion molecule, epithelial specific antigen, ESA) is a transmembrane glycoprotein (~40 kDa) expressed in epithelial tissues. It functions as a calcium-independent cell adhesion molecule, influencing cell cycle, proliferation, and metabolism through activation of c-myc and cyclins A/E. Ep-CAM-mediated adhesion negatively regulates cadherin-based adhesions, impacting epithelial differentiation and growth. Overexpression is associated with enhanced epithelial proliferation and is a marker for epithelial-derived tumors. It is highly expressed in human carcinomas and found on the baso-lateral surface of most simple epithelia, distinguishing adenocarcinomas from pleural mesotheliomas.
