Target Information
This gene generates several transcript variants differing in their first exons. At least three alternatively spliced variants encoding distinct proteins have been reported, two of which encode isoforms functioning as inhibitors of CDK4 kinase. Another transcript includes an alternate first exon located 20 Kb upstream, encoding a structurally unrelated protein (ARF) that stabilizes p53 by interacting with and sequestering MDM2. Despite structural and functional differences, both CDK inhibitor isoforms and ARF share a role in G1 cell cycle control. CDKN2A is a key tumor suppressor gene frequently mutated or deleted in various cancers.
