Target Information

The CDKN2A gene produces multiple transcript variants differing in their first exons. Two variants encode isoforms that act as inhibitors of CDK4 kinase, while another variant encodes an alternate open reading frame (ARF) protein that stabilizes p53 by interacting with MDM2, preventing p53 degradation. Despite structural differences, both CDK inhibitor isoforms and the ARF product regulate cell cycle G1 progression, contributing to tumor suppression. Mutations or deletions in this gene are frequently observed in various tumors, signifying its importance as a tumor suppressor gene.
