Target Information
Interferon alpha (IFN-alpha) is a Type I interferon belonging to a family of structurally related, species-specific proteins found only in vertebrates. Interaction of IFN-alpha with its receptor activates multiple signaling pathways involved in the innate immune response against viral infections. In humans, the IFN-alpha gene is located on chromosome 9 and includes 14 alpha isoforms along with beta, omega, epsilon, and kappa isoforms. Homologous molecules exist in many species, including mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish. IFN-alpha is mainly produced by plasmacytoid dendritic cells, plays a key role in antiviral defense, and modulates adaptive immunity. Dysfunction of IFN-alpha is associated with diseases such as Hepatitis C and Hepatitis.
