Target Information
Interferon alpha (IFNα) is a Type I interferon belonging to a family of structurally related, species-specific proteins found in vertebrates. IFNα interacts with its receptor to activate multiple signaling pathways involved in innate immune defense against viral infection.
In humans, the IFNα gene is located on chromosome 9 and includes 14 different alpha isoforms along with single beta, omega, epsilon, and kappa isoforms. Homologous molecules exist across species, including mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish.
Produced primarily by plasmacytoid dendritic cells, IFNα plays a key role in antiviral innate immunity and modulates adaptive immune responses. Dysregulation of IFNα is associated with diseases such as Hepatitis C and Hepatitis.
