Target Information
Interferon alpha (IFN alpha) is a Type I interferon belonging to a family of structurally related, species-specific proteins found in vertebrates. Binding of IFN-alpha to its receptor activates multiple signaling pathways involved in innate immune defense against viral infections.
In humans, the IFN alpha gene is located on chromosome 9 and includes 14 alpha isoforms, along with single beta, omega, epsilon, and kappa isoforms. Homologous molecules are present in many species including mice, birds, reptiles, and fish.
Produced primarily by plasmacytoid dendritic cells, IFN alpha plays a key role in antiviral innate immunity and modulation of adaptive immune responses. Dysregulation of IFN alpha is associated with diseases such as Hepatitis C and Hepatitis.
