Target Information
Interferon alpha (IFN alpha) is a Type I interferon belonging to a family of structurally related, species-specific proteins found only in vertebrates. Interaction of IFN alpha with its receptor triggers multiple signaling pathways involved in innate immune responses against viral infections. In humans, the IFN alpha gene is located on chromosome 9. Type I interferons include 14 alpha isoforms and single beta, omega, epsilon, and kappa isoforms. Homologous molecules exist across many species, including mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish. IFN alpha is mainly produced by plasmacytoid dendritic cells and plays a crucial role in antiviral innate immunity and modulation of adaptive immune responses. Dysregulation of IFN alpha is associated with diseases such as Hepatitis C and Hepatitis.
