Target Information

Estrogen Receptors (ER) are members of the steroid/thyroid hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors. The estrogen receptor is a ligand-activated transcription factor that, when bound to estrogen, undergoes a conformational change enabling dimerization and binding to estrogen response elements (ERE) in DNA. This binding can positively or negatively regulate gene transcription through interaction with coactivator or corepressor proteins.
There are two forms of the estrogen receptor, alpha (ESR1) and beta (ESR2), encoded by separate genes. Alternative RNA splicing produces at least four known alpha isoforms (66, 53, 47, and 35 kDa). Estrogen receptors are widely expressed in various tissues, essential for sexual development and reproductive function, and also play roles in bone and other tissues. They are implicated in pathological processes including breast cancer, endometrial cancer, and osteoporosis.
